Ordered by Napoleon Bonaparte and awarded for acts of valor at sea, Louis Berthoud's Marine Chronometer No. 52 carries a story of bravery, empire, and the birth of modern precision timekeeping. For this project, I returned to 2D animation to evoke the visual language of historical archives. I wanted to capture the aesthetic of early 1800s Romantic painting — that transitional space between the Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution, which remains underrepresented visually. I mixed collage-style imagery, public domain engravings from encyclopedias, and archival photographs to build a layered, period-accurate atmosphere.
